It is hard to appreciate the history and culture of a place while growing up, I think. I appreciated my hometown much more after I moved away too.

You have a good question, and it took a bit to find an answer- finally did with a search for “historical Lancaster MA.” There is apparently a marker at 602 Main St, Lancaster, MA 01523. Searching for historical markers can help too- see

Mary and the other captives spent their first night on this spot.

The following blog tells a bit more about where the Rowlandsons lived in the area:

A 1903 map by Henry Nourse of the arduous journey of Mary and some other captives may be found online at

https://sites.google.com/site/emilyfarrer/home/jos-rowlandson-and-mary-white/map-of-mary-rowlandsons-captivity-journey

Mary was redeemed/ransomed at Redemption Rock, in Princeton MA. See

for details.

You might ask at the local library or historical society about Mary- they may be able to tell you more about her life in the area.

Good to ‘meet’ you, cousin, and thanks for reading. I do hope to get more posted about Mary and her life. Please share any pictures or insights you may have from your visit- enjoy!

When I lived in MA I really didn’t fully understand the role my family played in early America. Now I do and am just amazed at all the hardships endured by so many that came before me. Mary was my 8th Great Aunt. I intend to visit Lancaster when I return home and would love to visit where she was captured and of course redemption rock. Can you tell me the address for where she captured? Thank you for sharing these photos and story. Can’t wait to return home and visit so many places that were significant for my family; Alden, White, Edson, Divoll, Blake, Carter, Sanborn, Pond, Whitcomb, Osgood and more.
