Who is Mlle. Sarah Broida??
Was she a Karklinski-Broida, who had gone to France to get a job? Was she a Broida from the Lithuanian Rabbi line? It would be very interesting to learn more about her life- she probably had some great stories to tell!
How wonderful that she was a doctor in 1908, when there were not that many female doctors.
The Mixte Steamship Company was based in Marseilles, France, and operated between 1855-1981 under various owners.
Mlle. Broida kept good company, at least in the newspapers- note the next paragraph, mentioning Marie Curie! Women were making in-roads, finally, in the sciences.
The last paragraph about Dr. Dontchakova, helps to give us some context. If Dr. Sarah Broida was a Karklinski-Broida, her roots were in Lithuania, often a part of Russia. Where did she go to medical school? Where was she licensed? Apparently she would not have been able to go to school in any of the Russian settlements. Many women doctors of that time period (and men as well) were Doctors of Osteopathy (D.O.s), which was more accepting of women and those who did not choose the path of a formal medical school.

This is fun. I have 8 Sarah Broidas in our family database. Based on referring to her as Mlle Broida, I am assuming she was still single and therefore was born a Broida. So if she is one of our family members that is a helpful clue.
1. The first Sarah Broida became Mrs. Charles Freidberg. I don’t know when but they had a child in 1913 so she could be the Sarah Broida. However, my records indicate she was born in 1893 so that would make it impractical for her to have an MD by 1908.
2. The next Sarah Broida, became Mrs. Jack Conn but after 1920. So she could be a candidate, but all indications are that she was born about 1899, so again too young.
3. The next Sarah Broida is the daughter of Morris Peter Karklinsky Broida, who died in 1930, and I have no record of her birth date. She married a man named Milchiker and had two children but I am not sure when. So she is possible.
4. The next is Sarah Karklinsky Broida who became Mrs. Carl Seigal, While I don’t know when they were married, their first child was born in 1902 so she is unlikely to be Mlle Broida
5. The next Sarah Broida became Mrs. David Carnovitz who Anne Greenspan is descended from. While I don’t know their marriage date, their child Nathan Greenspan was born in 1904 so again unlikely our Mlle Broida
6. The next is Sarah Lee Broida who was born in 1916 so again not her.
7. Then comes Sarah Mildred Broida born in 1913, so again nope.
8. The last is Sarah Sydney Broida born in 2000, so not possible.
In my quests for Broidas I have several living in Israel who are not our relatives and come from Romania mostly. I have a recollection that one may be from France, but that is possibly just me having a correlated recollection.
Based on my research I suspect Mlle Sarah Broida, MD is not from our line.
